In France in the early 1970s, the police regularly conducted chases against prostitutes, issued fines, and threatened them with imprisonment. As a result, the women worked underground – without protection or rights. Because no one did anything about the violence perpetrated by the state and their clients, the sex workers dared to cause a scandal: On June 2, 1975, around 150 prostitutes occupied a central church in Lyon.
This marks the beginning of the "sex worker movement," which fights for equality and recognition. Today is the 50th anniversary of "International Sex Worker Day," which originated in France, and a week of action is being held to commemorate the occasion. The sex worker action group is presenting a draft bill they themselves have designed. Coco la Cuntra works as a sex worker in Berlin and helped write it.
