“As long as most of us continue to face multiple forms of discrimination, I will sit here and fight for us and our work!” Around forty people nod, applaud, and ask the speaker, Blade, questions throughout the evening about residency status, registration, and the legal document that her organization, together with lawyers, spent months developing. They all just barely fit into the back room of the queer Neukölln bar “Silverfuture,” which has been a safe haven for many in Berlin’s LGBTQ community for almost 20 years. And, according to its own mission statement, “criminal queers” are also welcome here, alongside the “kings” and “queers.” This perhaps gives a clue as to why this event is taking place here. Because the work Blade talks about and wants to fight for is her own: sex work. And that, she says, is criminalized.
